Your round-up of the latest, greatest data stories
Hello iuri,

This week we’ve been sweating our way through a heatwave that has seen the UK’s hottest day for 17 years and the longest stretch of days above 34C in London for six decades. According to scientists at the World Weather Attribution initiative (WWA), the climate crisis is making heatwaves longer, hotter and more likely to happen [frantically searches for solar-powered fans…]

Also feeling the heat this week is the UK's exam regulator, as it was revealed that 40% of teacher-assessed A-level results have been downgraded by an algorithm. School closures and exam cancellations caused by Covid-19 forced the UK’s exam regulator, Ofqual, to create a statistical model to moderate teacher-assessed grades, but this new approach has left some schools ‘extremely concerned about the detrimental impact on their students’. The UK's equality watchdog could get involved to make sure pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds aren't disproportionately affected.

And finally, the number of UK deaths from Covid-19 has been lowered by over 5,000 after a review of the data. England will now only include deaths if they have occurred within 28 days of a positive test result, bringing the methodology in line with the rest of the UK.

The future’s already arrived – this is the time for decision

Dear iuri

In light of recent global events, discussions around data sharing – and how we use that data – are more critical than ever. The future’s already arrived – this is the time for decision.

The ODI Summit is the ODI’s flagship event, bringing people together from a broad range of sectors, backgrounds and countries to discuss critical issues around the future of data. Join over 1,000 attendees to enjoy an exciting line-up of keynotes, high-profile speakers, interactive panels, roundtable discussions, performances, taster workshops and demos exploring key themes about the future of data.

The event has keynotes from the ODI’s co-founders, inventor of the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee and artificial intelligence expert Sir Nigel Shadbolt, as well as the ODI’s Vice President Jeni Tennison.

"I always leave the event more inspired and knowledgeable – and this year was no exception. Well done on arranging such a varied and interesting set of speakers"  – Jonathan Silvester, Founder, IONI
